There are many reasons to study Biomedical Engineering at UBC. Here are just some of the many reasons.

Our Location…

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada’s third largest metropolitan area (2.4 million), is located on Canada’s West Coast—the gateway to the Pacific Rim. It is renowned for its natural beauty, with stunning vistas of mountains and ocean, and its myriad of recreational opportunities from skiing to sailing. Vancouver was recently rated “the most livable city in the world” based on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure (Economist 2005 livability survey).

The University of British Columbia…

Established in 1908, the University of British Columbia is one of Canada’s largest and most prestigious public research and teaching institutions. Its more than 35,000 undergraduate and 8,000 graduate students from Canada and all over the world benefit equally from the intellectually challenging environment. UBC offers a range of innovative undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in the arts, sciences, engineering, medicine, law, commerce and other faculties. UBC is consistently ranked among the world’s 50 best universities, one of only two Canadian universities in this category, and is ranked within the top 10 North American universities.

Unique program features…

The innovative Biomedical Engineering program emphasizes a balance of biomedical engineering and life science study with a focus on clinical and industrial application. This interdisciplinary program, administered by the Faculty of Applied Science, uses engineering techniques and technologies to address needs within the medical and healthcare industries. Opportunities for education and research exist in areas such as biomechanics, biomaterials, biochemical processing, cellular engineering, imaging, medical devices, micro-electro-mechanical implantable systems, physiological modeling, simulation, monitoring and control, as well as medical robotics.

See the Graduate Programs page for details.

Abundant opportunities…

UBC’s Biomedical Engineering program offers students unparalleled access to engineering experts in the fields of chemical and biological, electrical and computer, materials and mechanical engineering. UBC engineering graduates have been industry leaders, especially in the medical device industry, and provide a network of professionals within the community. Because of the continuing demand for top-quality biomedical engineers, ample employment opportunities exist within academia, government and industry.
