PROGRAM OVERVIEW
SYNERGY
SBME SYNERGY is our Undergraduate Summer Research Program, running May-August 2023. Participating undergraduate students have the opportunity to get hands-on research experience with researchers from the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH), the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD), the Genome Science and Technology Graduate Program (GSAT), the Life Sciences Institute (LSI), and of course, SBME. Students will work in labs at one of our partners’ Vancouver locations, and will participate in Synergy programming like social events and professional development workshops on campus at UBC Vancouver.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
During the program, students will work on a defined research project with a UBC supervisor, participate in professional development programming, and present their research at our Undergraduate Research Day.
You will benefit from research skills workshops, career development seminars, complementary social events and more, all while expanding your knowledge and experience in active research.
TRAVEL AWARD
SBME Synergy is committed to facilitating equitable access to the Summer Studentship program. Travel awards have been made available by the School of Biomedical Engineering for students who have been historically, persistently, and systemically marginalized from and within higher education, and who demonstrate a financial need.
Travel Award Deadline: April 2, 2023

SBME Synergy awards are open to all undergraduate and medical students interested in working under the supervision of a Principal Investigator (PI), Research Associate (RA), or Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) from the following institutions: DMCBH, ICORD, GSAT, LSI, and SBME.
Your first step is to reach out to the PI you are interested in working with. Best practice is to send them a polished resume, cover letter, your transcript and/or a statement of interest.
Once you and your supervisor have agreed to apply for the program, you will work together to complete and submit an application.

FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. I am an international student at UBC. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes! International students who are currently registered at UBC are eligible to apply.
2. I am a student studying outside of UBC. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes! Students who are currently registered at a recognized Canadian university are eligible to apply. Reminder: the program takes place at UBC, not your home university. Remote participation is not permitted.
3. I received a Summer Studentship award in the past. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes, past awardees are eligible to apply; however, funding is not guaranteed.
4. When will successful applicants be announced?
Funding decisions will be announced in April.
5. Can I accept the Synergy Summer Studentship award in addition to another summer research award?
Although students are encouraged to apply for all eligible funding competitions to maximize their funding chances, the Synergy Summer Studentship award cannot be combined with any other award for the eligible time period. Thus, if the SBME Synergy application is successful, students are NOT eligible to hold both an SBME Synergy Summer Studentship and any other funding (including UBC SSRP) during the funding period (May 2, 2023 to August 26, 2023).
6. What if I applied for UBC SSRP funding and won’t get those results until April/May?
We recognize that the timing of the UBC SSRP award doesn’t align well with the SBME Synergy award. We will hold your Synergy spot for you until you receive your SSRP results. At that point, you will need to notify us of which award you want to accept. We just ask that you notify us as soon as you can so that we can offer your spot to another student if you decline the Synergy award.
7. Do I have to attend all of the Synergy events? Will they be offered virtually? Can I participate in the program remotely?
Attending all of the Synergy events is a requirement of the Synergy award. This year the events will be held in-person, not virtually or hybrid. Remote participation in the program is not permitted. If you unexpectedly need to miss an event due to a personal emergency, please just let us know.
8. I am graduating in May. Can I still apply?
Unfortunately no. The SBME Synergy Undergraduate Studentship program is specifically for current undergraduate students. You must be an undergraduate student for the duration of the program (May 2, 2023 to August 26, 2023).
9. Do I need to provide a backup remote project plan?
No, this year we don’t require a backup remote project plan.
