UBC’s School of Biomedical Engineering is building a future where biological and engineering fundamentals are applied seamlessly to the discovery, design, and development of transformative solutions in health and healthcare. 

The program is fully accredited and graduating students can register as an Engineer in Training.

SBME is an innovation hub for education and research spanning the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine. We offer a Bachelor of Applied Science in Biomedical Engineering undergraduate degree that students can control and design to the subjects of their choosing. Specializations

Undergraduate program specializations are grouped around four main BME themes. As you progress through your degree and learn about the array of subjects and possibilities, you can begin to customize your learning experience toward a specialization that interests you the most. This means you get learning experience across a broad spectrum of topics while creating your very own learning experience into the subject of your choosing. See a brief summary of each theme below.

Biomedical Informatics is the intersection of data science and biology. Learn to apply computational and engineering techniques to increase the understanding and utility of biological and medical data.

Application Areas: pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning, drug design, and gene identification.

Biomechanics & Biomaterials applies the principles of mechanics and materials science to solving dynamic physical problems in the human biological system.

Application Areas: mechanics of tissue engineered materials; design of orthopaedic implants, safety devices, surgical instrumentation, and total joint replacements.

Cellular Bioengineering applies engineering and design principles to the analysis, understanding and leveraging of cellular and molecular biological processes.

Application Areas: gene therapy, synthetic biology, organ tissue engineering, protein engineering, drug delivery, and nucleic acid engineering

Biomedical Systems & Signals uses engineering principles to understand fundamental processes that produce images and electronic signals in biological systems.

Application Areas: X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound, MRI, neural engineering, and wearable sensors.
