SBME Synergy Summer Studentship Program

Please note that the 2023 Synergy Program information will be available on February 1st, 2023.

Hands-On Research Experience

Welcome to SBME Synergy, an Undergraduate Summer Research Program built on the foundations of our partnership
with the Centre for Blood Research (CBR), and expanded to include the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH),
the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD), and the Genome Science and Technology Graduate Program (GSAT)

This program is an opportunity to get hands-on research experience in world-class laboratories.

Are you part of the 2022 Synergy Program?

If so, click the button below to access all event and cohort information.

SBME SYNERGY is our new Undergraduate Summer Research Program, running May-August 2022. Participating undergraduate students have the opportunity to get hands-on research experience with researchers from the Centre for Blood Research (CBR), the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH), the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD), the Genome Science and Technology Graduate Program (GSAT), and of course, SBME.

NOTE: Outside the Synergy program, CBR will also be hosting a separate application process for their Summer Program. Applicants submitting a project with a CBR supervisor are more than welcome to apply through the Synergy website (Deadline March 18th) or the CBR portal (deadline March 11th).

During the program, students will work on a defined research project with a UBC supervisor, participate in professional development programming, and present their research at our Undergraduate Research Day.

You will benefit from research skill workshops, career development seminars, complementary social events and more, all while expanding your knowledge and experience in active research.

SBME Synergy awards are open to all undergraduate and medical students interested in working under the supervision of a Principal Investigator (PI), Research Associate (RA), or Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) from the following institutions: CBR, DMCBH, ICORD, GSAT and the SBME.

Your first step is to reach out to the PI you are interested in working with. Best practice is to send them a polished resume, cover letter, your transcript and/or a statement of interest.

Once you and your supervisor have agreed to apply for the program, you will work together to complete and submit an application.

Review all eligible supervisors through the websites below:

Have you reviewed the application criteria, made sure you’re eligible and locked-in a supervisor? Then you’re ready to apply.

Submit your application below and best of luck! Successful applicants will be notified late March/Early April.

1. I am an international student at UBC. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes! International students who are currently registered at UBC are eligible to apply.

2. I am a student studying outside of UBC. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes! Students who are currently registered at a recognized Canadian university are eligible to apply.

3. I received a Summer Studentship award in the past. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes, past awardees are eligible to apply; however, funding is not guaranteed.

4. When will successful applicants be announced?

Funding decisions will be announced in late March/early April.

5. Can I accept the Synergy Summer Studentship award in addition to another summer research award?

Although students are encouraged to apply for all eligible funding competitions to maximize their funding chances, only one SBME Synergy Summer Studentship award may be accepted for the eligible time period. Thus, if the SBME Synergy application is successful, students are NOT eligible to hold both a SBME Synergy Summer Studentship and any other funding during the funding period (May 2, 2022 to August 26, 2022).

Students who accept other sources of funding are still welcome to join the Synergy program, and will benefit from enhanced programming in research skill workshops, career development and complementary social events.
